Bailey/Howe Liaison Program


By supporting and encouraging regular and effective communication between the UVM Libraries and the University's colleges, departments, and programs, the Bailey/Howe Library Liaison Program provides a framework for the creation of effective working relationships between library faculty and the faculty and students in other academic units on campus, leading to improved and increased usage of library services and collections. The program also serves as a gauge of the needs of university students, faculty, and staff and informs planning and strategic directions for the Libraries.

  1. Communication and Outreach
    • Initiate and strengthen communication channels between the libraries and academic units.
    • Form collaborative partnerships with teaching faculty in support of student learning.
    • Effectively market library services and programs.
  2. Student and Faculty Services
    • Provide effective research assistance through the development and delivery of reference and consultation services.
    • Increase information literacy competencies of students through deeper involvement in curricular planning and development.
  3. Information Access and Collection Development
    • Increase access to and use of library collections and resources.
    • Assist in the selection, evaluation, and management of digital and print resources.

Core Activities

While liaison activities will vary due to the differing information needs found within the various academic disciplines, a few core activities are expected of every liaison:

  • Introduce oneself as a library liaison to members of assigned departments at least once a year
    through those communication methods that are deemed to be most appropriate
  • Make best effort to meet at least once in person with all newly hired faculty members in
    assigned departments
  • Schedule a meeting with administrative head of assigned areas, preferably prior to the start of
    each new academic year
  • Respond to all inquires from assigned faculty and students in an effective, timely manner
  • Analyze the curriculum and stay informed of curricular changes in all assigned areas
  • Serve as an advocate for and provider of information literacy instruction within assigned areas
    targeted for such efforts
  • Actively work with the Collection Development and Acquisitions librarians on improving library
    collections in assigned areas
  • Promote newly acquired resources of specific relevance to assigned departments
  • Update (or create) relevant library subject guides on a regular basis
